How much do you make?

Here’s the situation, you’re in the middle of your phone interview and the recruiter says "Can you tell me about your salary history? Or how much you are currently earning?" – How do you respond? What are your options here?

Let me be clear and say, first off, the recruiter is out of bounds asking that question- flat out that is clearly none of their business. However, a recruiter may ask you “What your salary expectations are? Or what salary range you would expect from this role? Those questions are absolutely acceptable and you can respond by giving the recruiter a range for your expectations.

So how do you handle a pushy recruiter? If you fear that saying, "No I’d rather not!" to a recruiter will hurt your chances of getting a good job, you will have a very difficult time refusing any request a recruiter makes of you. I have told my client’s in the past that it is okay to say, "Thanks anyway!" to a pushy recruiter.

Here’s how to handle your next conversation with a pushy recruiter:

Recruiter: So, Liam what are you earning now?

You (cheerfully): I'm looking at roles that pay between $40K and $50K. Is this opportunity in that range?

Recruiter: I think it is. I can get back to you. But that's about what you're earning now -- about $40K?

You: That's the range that works for me. Do you want to talk to your client about their salary range, and get back to me?

Recruiter: Let's keep talking. You have a good background.

You don't have to be defensive with a recruiter on the phone. You can just keep the focus on your salary target, as opposed to your current salary.

We understand how talking about money can be awkward but negotiations are an important part of the job process.
